McDonald's to fix menu item cheesing off customers

McDonald's Corp. is working on fixing a problem with some of its Mozzarella Cheese Sticks that’s left a number of social-media-savvy customers a bit cheesed off.

"We are aware of a low volume of guest concerns about our Mozzarella Cheese Sticks," said Lisa McComb, director of media relations at Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s, in an email Thursday about the item that launched with the company’s new McPick2 menu promotion at the beginning of the year.

"In these instances, we believe the cheese melted out during the baking process in our kitchens and shouldn't have been served," McComb said in the company statement. "We apologize to any customers who may have been affected. We are working to fix this in our restaurants."

Complaints began surfacing on Twitter in late December as the three-piece Mozzarella Cheese Sticks began appearing on the McPick 2 menu, which replaced the popular Dollar Menu and allowed customers to choose two items for $2.

Sherman Chen, also known as @ShermChen of Irvine, Calif., posted a photo on Dec. 31 with the comment: “@McDonalds new Mozzarella Sticks has no Mozzarella. They should just call it Stick.”

The cheese-less sticks continued to appear last week. Abbie Burke, also known as @AbbieBurke21 and a reporter for Fox 21 News in Colorado Springs, Colo., noted the sticks snafu:

Other Twitter users found they were only getting two sticks instead of the promised three.

With McDonald’s aware of the Mozzarella Cheese Stick inconsistencies, the quick-service chain appears dedicated to turning these frowns upside down.
